The Problem...
High Volume Crate and Pallet Disposal
Central News of Akron,
Ohio, distributes over a thousand different pocket books, magazines
and periodicals each month to hundreds of outlets in its marketing area.
Unsold copies are returned for credit, and must be completely mutilated
to prevent them from being salvaged and returned again for credit. The
disposal system was effective, but inefficient and expensive. A BloApCo
shredder discharged the shredded material directly into a dump truck
-- that had to be continuously moved to assure even loading. Scrap was
trucked to a local incinerator. Central News was charged per truckload
for disposal, and tipping fees were about to be doubled.
The Solution...
A Piggyback Shredder over a Horizontal Baler
After surveying similar
operations throughout the country, Central News specified and installed
a specially designed BloApCo Model 3K32-2536 BV Shredder mounted piggyback
over a Selco horizontal closed-door baler capable of processing up to
12,000 lbs. per day. The shredder is fed by an inclined belt conveyor,
complete with a safety overweight plate. According to Central News,
this new shredder/baler system destroys or mutilates 99.9% of the publications,
eliminating any possibility of them being returned a second time for
credit. The uniformly shredded scrap is compressed into extremely dense
2,100 lb. bales, thus reducing the weekly volume of material to 20 to
25 bales...one trailer load. The scrap is now in a form that is valuable
and can be picked up for recycling, rather than hauled and incinerated
at a cost to Central News. Their company truck and driver wages also
have been eliminated. Savings are estimated at about $15 per ton of
scrap. (Their 15-year-old BloApCo shredder was sold, reconditioned and
is still in service in the area shredding other paper products.)
