The Problem...
Reclaiming Filled Packages
C&H Sugar Company produces
more than 700,000 tons of refined granulated sugar per year at its main
plant in Crockett, Calif. Any damaged, mislabeled or improperly filled
packages must be reclaimed, reprocessed and recycled. These 24 to 100
lbs. cartons and bales of unsaleable packages were manually cut open
and the sugar poured into a screen feeder, which in turn feeds the sugar
in a reclamation auger. The job was labor intensive -- requiring up
to five workers a day -- and inefficient.
The Solution...
A BloApCo 36" Vertical Shredder
A system was designed
featuring a BloApCo 36" vertical shredder fed by an 18" wide, 24' long
infeed belt conveyor. The BloApCo shredder accepts any size or configuration
of package, and its "Pierce-and-Tear" action readily separates the contents
from the outer package. The shredded packaging and contents fall onto
a special rotary screen which separates the sugar from the waste paper
and cartons. All of the sugar is reprocessed. The paper and cartons
are automatically fed into a horizontal baler for compaction and sale
as recyclable baled scrap. The slow speed of the "Pierce-and-Tear" shredder
also eliminated noise and dust during the reclamation process. One part-time
worker now accomplishes what five full-time works did in reclaiming
of 4,500 lbs. of product per hour. C&H estimates that the BloApCo system
has increased reclamation productivity 500% and reduced labor and maintenance
costs. This combination of savings enabled C&H to recoup the system
investment in only four months.
