The Problem...
All Rejected and Overrun Plastic
Parts
In February 1993,
the plastics operation of Navistar International Transportation Corporation
in Columbus, OH, installed a 4,000-ton press to mold 127-pound hulls
and 65-pound decks for the Yamaha Wave runner water recreation vehicle.
The facility has 14 large tonnage SMC presses that manufacture not
only the hulls and decks, but a complete array of truck, auto and custom
molded parts. All rejected and overrun parts were being sent to
landfills.
The Navistar engineering
team was challenged to accomplish three major goals. First, due to a
corporate-wide dedication to quality, they had to destroy any off-spec
product. Second, because of the rapid increase in landfill costs, they
had to increase their container weights and decrease transportation
and hauling costs by size reduction. Third, the team was assigned the task of finding an
outlet to recycle the product, thus eliminating it from the wastestream.
The Solution...
BloApCo's Custom Engineered Shredder
 |
After months of investigation and research, the Navistar Engineering
team found an outlet for the material to be recycled. Now, the problem
of "size-reduction' was at hand. Because some of
the truck parts measured up to 95.44" x 54.88" x 43", the task of handling these mammoth parts was a difficult one. After months of visits to see several shredder
manufacturers and running numerous shred tests, the Navistar team determined
that BloApCo had the best system design and capabilities of anyone. It was
not only the special features of the BloApCo "Pierce-and-Tear" concept,
i.e., low horsepower requirements, minimal maintenance required and
the unit's operating under 80 dba, but the fact that all BloApCo shredders
are custom-engineered to adapt to each customer's specific needs. |
After several more shred tests and system design meetings, Navistar
purchased and installed the BloApCo shredder. Today, the shredder readily
shreds all of their molded products without the assistance of any pre-crushing
devices. The operators simply place the products to be shredded on the
infeed conveyor of the shredder. The shredded pieces automatically are
deposited into a compactor, compacted into a 40 cu. yd. block, then
sent out to a secondary market to be recycled. Today, Navistar personnel
will tell you that the purchase of the BloApCo shredder is the best
decision. Another illustration of BloApCo teaming up with the customer
to provide solutions that work.
